Unit 4: Celebrations Reflection
Studio four was about celebrations. However, I interpreted this unit having all the previous units incorporated as well, identity, relationships, and stories. I say this because in studio one, we made finger puppets. These finger puppets celebrated something about you, which goes along with identity and stories. I created a self-portrait of myself because I am celebrating the little accomplishments in every day. Studio two, we made magazine covers. We were creating a story from the 21st century. My story was about emphasizing the importance of Education. Last, studio three was an artist’s choice and I decided to create a dream catcher that was related to my lesson plan. This could have incorporated all of the units. This was my very unit out of all four of them. We got to work with clay, something out of the ordinary. We got to choose one of our creations and that adds personal uniqueness to the final product that we were the ones who chose what to do.
As stated earlier, I think all these units are incorporated into each other without really noticing it. There are multiple ways to integrate these studios into the classroom. The magazine cover can be integrated through social studies with the big idea of culture. The students can research the culture, create the front page with the big ideas then finish the magazine with what the students had researched and learned. Artist choice can be used across the board. This would be a great studio for the fact of giving the students options and voice in the classroom. Pink (2006) states, “…people assemble the artifacts of their lives into a narrative that tells the world, and maybe themselves, who they are and what they’re about…” (115). Students are still learning and growing and by incorporating art within the classroom and giving the students choice and voice, they can start to find out who they are by the messages the art work portrays.
