Unit 2: Relationships Reflection
Unit two’s lesson was focused around the concept of relationships. All our projects reflected our own personal relationships. Also, reflected relationships of objects to one another. Our first studio that we completed was printmaking. I chose a picture of my softball team my freshman year of college. I chose a quote that had to do with experiences and going on a journey because my freshman year of college was the one of the best experiences that I had and made some of my best friends. The Rene Magritte studio was different than normal. We had our classmates basically design it for us. We originally got to choose the background and passed it around our table and our classmates picked pictures to put on it. This studio was all about surrealism. I don’t think my pictures had any connections to anything. I feel that they are very random. We then had to create messages on the back of the postcards that relate. I felt very disconnected from this activity. I did not enjoy how they turned out and was lost on what to put on the back. Our last studio was about pop-ups. I chose the Hollywood hills because I was born in California and that is where my whole family lives. It is where my heart is.
I think there would be many lessons where you could fit these different studios in the classroom. Pink states, “design has become an essential aptitude for personal fulfillment and professional success” (Pink, p. 70). Not many people realize how important integration is. According to Pink, design can ultimately change the world. This reiterates the importance of integrating art into the classroom and has the children express themselves not only with paper and pencil but also through their artwork.
